Evensong has launched the Cure Mila Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Campaign with a pledge to donate 10% of purchases to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (cff.org) starting immediately.
Named for our grand-niece recently born with CF, we were compelled to join in the battle after learning about the struggles facing infants and their families.
Babies born with Cystic Fibrosis face a physical struggle from their first breath.
Babies who have CF have very thick and sticky mucus that builds up in the body. When this mucus builds up in the lungs, it blocks airways and causes breathing problems and infections. Airways are tubes that carry air in and out of the lungs. As a baby with CF gets older, lung infections can get worse. This can lead to serious, and sometimes deadly, lung damage.
In order avoid these problems, high-frequency chest wall oscillation therapy is performed that involves an inflatable vest that is attached to a machine. The machine mechanically performs chest physical therapy by vibrating at a high frequency. The vest vibrates the chest to loosen and thin mucus. Every five minutes, the person stops the machine and coughs or huffs. For Mila, this means mom or dad has to help out.
